What manual setting is good at, and where it stops

A skilled setter working in wax places stones one at a time with tweezers or a wax pen under magnification. The work is flexible: any size, any layout, any correction on the spot. Its limits are consistency and volume. Placement varies from stone to stone and from morning to evening, which shows up after casting as uneven rows and stones sitting proud. Output per setter is a few hundred to a few thousand stones a day depending on size, and the smallest sizes, 0.8 to 1.2 mm micro-pavé, are the slowest and most tiring.

What the machine does not change

  • Model preparation. The wax model still has to be produced (injected, milled or printed), mounted on a base with stud and bedded in setting silicone. The machine only places the stones.
  • Stone quality. The machine picks what is in the tray. Out-of-band or poorly cut stones cause pickup misses in the same way they cause trouble by hand.
  • Consumables. Nozzles are wear items and trays lose their pocket edge with use. A line that runs out of silicone or runs a worn nozzle stops, whatever the machine is rated at.
  • Casting and finishing. Everything downstream is unchanged.

How to work out whether it pays for your unit

Count stones, not pieces. Take a typical month's production, multiply pieces by stones per piece, and compare that to what the machine sets in an hour. A unit setting a few thousand stones a month will not keep a machine busy; a unit setting tens of thousands a week is paying 10 to 12 salaries for work one operator and one machine can do.
