Laser welding machine for jewellery guide: parts of the machine, how the laser welds, four steps to use it, the jobs it does and who uses it

Semsons Tech Laser Welding Machine for Jewellery - 200W Pulsed YAG Welder

Joins gold, silver and platinum at the joint, without heating the whole piece.

A torch heats everything around a joint. On a set piece that often means taking the stones out, soldering, then setting them again. This machine welds with short pulses of laser light, aimed at a spot as small as 0.2 mm that you line up under a 10x microscope. The metal melts only at that spot and sets again within moments. Many workshops call it a laser soldering machine. It welds: the metal of the piece fuses to itself, with no solder in the joint.

How It Works

The laser inside the cabinet gives out a pulse of infrared light at 1064 nm. The optics focus that pulse onto the joint you have lined up under the microscope. Each pulse lasts 0.1 to 20 milliseconds and carries up to 150 joules, which melts a small pool of metal at that spot. The pool closes the joint and sets again. Argon gas flows over the spot while the metal is molten, so the weld comes out bright instead of black.

How to Use It

  1. Set the pulse. Choose the energy, pulse width and pulse rate for the metal and its thickness.
  2. Line up the joint under the microscope or on the CCD screen.
  3. Fire. One pulse makes one spot weld. Move the piece and pulse again to run a seam.

What You Can Do With It

The jobWhat the laser does
Ring sizingCloses the shank after sizing, often with the stones left in the head
Worn or broken prongsBuilds the prong tip back up in place
Chain and clasp repairJoins a link or jump ring without heating the rest of the chain
Porosity in castingsFills the pinhole with metal, ready to be finished flush
Worn or thin sectionsAdds metal with filler wire where a piece has worn thin
Tacking parts togetherHolds two parts in position before soldering or finishing

After welding and polishing, an ultrasonic cleaner lifts polishing compound out of the setting.

Laser Welding or Torch Soldering?

QuestionLaser welding on this machine
How much of the piece gets hot?Only a small area around the weld spot
Is there solder in the joint? No. The metal of the piece fuses to itself
Do the stones have to come out?Often not. Heat-sensitive stones still need distance or removal
How precise is it?Weld spot from 0.2 mm, placed under a 10x microscope
Does the joint show after polishing? The joint is the same metal, so there is no solder line of a different colour

What You Can Weld

  • Gold - yellow, white and rose, in the karats used in jewellery
  • Silver - needs more energy per pulse than gold, because silver reflects the laser light and carries heat away fast
  • Platinum and palladium

Keep the beam on the metal, never on a stone. Emerald, opal, pearl and treated stones are more sensitive to heat: weld further away from them at lower energy, or take them out first.

If you do not know the alloy of a piece that came in over the counter, check it on a gold testing machine first, then set the pulse for that metal.

Common Questions

What is a jewellery laser welding machine used for?

Repair and manufacturing work where a torch would heat too much of the piece: ring sizing, re-tipping prongs, chain and clasp repair, filling porosity in castings and tacking parts together.

Is a laser welding machine the same as a laser soldering machine?

In the jewellery trade both names are used for this machine. Strictly, it welds: the laser melts the metal of the piece itself, so there is no solder in the joint.

Can I weld a ring without removing the stones?

Often, yes. The heat stays close to the weld spot, so many repairs are done with the stones in place. Keep the beam off the stone, and take heat-sensitive stones such as emerald, opal and pearl out, or weld further away from them at lower energy.

Which metals can it weld?

Gold in yellow, white and rose, silver, platinum and palladium. Silver needs more energy per pulse than gold for the same joint.

Does it need argon gas?

Yes, for a clean weld. The argon nozzle is built into the machine. You arrange the argon cylinder and regulator locally. The gas keeps air off the molten metal, so the weld stays bright.

Do I need filler wire?

Not for a tight joint, where the two edges melt into each other. For a gap or a worn section, feed a filler wire of the same metal into the spot as you pulse.

What does it need in the workshop?

A single-phase 220 V, 50 Hz power point, an argon cylinder and floor space for the cabinet and the operator's seat. The chiller is inside the cabinet, so there is no separate cooling unit. The cabinet is on castors.

Are installation and training included?

Yes. Our technician installs the machine at your workshop and trains your operator on site. See installation, training, spares and service.

Is it safe to use in a workshop?

It is an industrial laser. Nobody should run it before the on-site training, which covers eye protection and safe handling. Keep hands out of the beam path.

What is the price, and how does booking work?

The full product price and the booking amount per machine are shown at the top of this page, both including GST. The booking amount counts toward the full price, and the balance is due on installation.

Can I buy it online, and how long does dispatch take?

It is not sold through online checkout. Book 1 to 10 machines through our sales team on WhatsApp or by phone. Dispatch is about 10 days from booking, and delivery is free.

Can I return it?

No, returns are not accepted. If it arrives damaged, tell us within 48 hours of delivery. If a manufacturing defect is verified on inspection, a replacement may be considered, subject to the product and service terms.
