Portable gold testing machine guide: parts of the tester, no mark on the piece, three steps to test it, what you can test and who uses it

Semsons Tech Portable Gold Testing Machine

Place the piece, touch the metal, read the karat.

This is a portable electronic gold tester. It reads the karat of jewellery, coins and old gold without acid, without gel and without a scratch. The piece goes on the test pad, the pen probe touches the metal, and the karat shows on the tester's own screen. It runs on a rechargeable battery, so it works at the showroom counter, in the strongroom, at a gold loan branch or at a seller's place.

How It Works

The tester takes an electronic reading of the metal through the pen probe. The piece lies on the test pad, and the reading is taken where the probe tip touches it. The tester turns that reading into a karat and shows it on the screen. Nothing is put on the piece and nothing is taken from it. It uses no X-rays, no acid and no chemicals.

How to Use It

  1. Place the piece on the test pad.
  2. Touch the metal with the pen probe. Clean metal, not a stone or a solder joint.
  3. Read the karat on the screen and hand the piece back.

What You Can Test

Rings, chains, bangles, necklaces and earrings, including pieces with stones: touch the metal and leave the stone alone. Old and scrap gold bought over the counter. Gold coins and small bars.

Electronic Tester or Another Gold Test?

MethodHow it compares
Electronic tester (this machine)No mark and no chemicals. The pen probe touches the metal on the test pad. Shows a karat. Battery powered, so it goes to wherever the gold is.
Acid and touchstoneScratches the piece and needs acid in the shop. Puts the piece in a karat band from the colour of a streak.
XRF, such as the Signet - PCX-ray testing in a shielded chamber on the counter. Shows gold purity and the other metals in the alloy. Stays at one counter.
Conductivity, such as the Gold Coin Testing MachineChecks coins and bars below the surface for a hidden core. Shows conductivity, not a karat.
Fire assayThe reference method at assaying centres and refineries. Melts the sample it tests.

What the Karat Numbers Mean

Hallmarked gold in India uses the grades in IS 1417. A karat on the screen matches one of these:

KaratGold content
24K999 parts per thousand
23K958 parts per thousand
22K916 parts per thousand, the usual grade for Indian jewellery
20K833 parts per thousand
18K750 parts per thousand
14K585 parts per thousand
9K375 parts per thousand

Common Questions

What is a portable gold testing machine?

A gold tester small enough to carry to the gold. This one is electronic: the piece goes on the test pad, the pen probe touches the metal, and the karat shows on its screen.

Is this an XRF machine?

No. It is an electronic tester: the pen probe takes an electronic reading of the metal. It uses no X-rays. For an XRF reading of the gold and the other metals in the alloy, see the Signet - PC.

Does it damage the jewellery?

No. There is no acid, no gel and no scratching. The probe only touches the metal, and the customer gets the piece back exactly as they handed it over.

How do I check 916 gold with it?

Place the piece on the test pad, touch a clean patch of metal with the probe and read the karat. 916 is 22K, so a genuine 916 piece reads 22K. The reading is for your own buying and lending decisions. It does not replace a hallmark, which comes from a recognised assaying and hallmarking centre.

Is it 100% accurate?

No gold test is right on every piece. The reading comes from the metal where the probe touches, so touch clean metal, away from stones and solder joints. For a borderline piece, fire assay at an assaying centre settles it.

Can it find plated or fake gold?

It reads the metal where the probe touches. If you suspect a piece is plated or has a different metal inside, check it a second way before you buy: an XRF machine such as the Signet - PC reads the alloy, and the Gold Coin Testing Machine checks coins and bars below the surface.

Can it test silver or platinum?

It is set up to show the karat of gold. If you mainly buy silver or platinum, speak to our sales team before you book.

Does it need a plug point or chemicals?

No. It runs on a rechargeable battery, and the charger comes with it. There is no acid, gel or liquid to buy, store or refill.

What is the price, and how do I book it?

The full product price, the booking amount and the balance are shown at the top of this page, all including GST. It is not sold through online checkout: book 1 to 10 units through our sales team on WhatsApp or by phone. Dispatch is about 30–40 days from booking, and the balance is due on delivery.

Can I return it?

No, returns are not accepted. If it arrives damaged, tell us within 48 hours of delivery. A verified manufacturing defect is replaced after inspection, subject to the product and service terms.
