A Semsons Tech gold coin testing machine. It checks whether a gold coin or bar is real by its electrical conductivity, with no damage to the piece.
✔ Finds tungsten fakes - tungsten cannot read like gold
✔ Tests through packaging - capsules and blisters up to 3 mm
✔ No damage - no acid, no scratching, no filing
✔ Reading in seconds - in MS/m, beside the expected value
✔ Coins and small bars - about 1/4 oz to 2 oz
✔ Battery powered - over 10 hours per charge

Checks whether a gold coin or bar is real, without opening the capsule or marking the metal.
The fake gold coins and bars that are hardest to catch have a tungsten core under a layer of real gold. Tungsten weighs almost the same as gold, so the weighing scale passes it, and an acid or touchstone test only checks the gold on the outside. This machine tests the metal by its electrical conductivity. You choose what the piece should be, place it on the sensor pad and read the screen. If the reading does not match the value for that metal, do not buy the piece until it has been checked further.
The sensor pad sends a small magnetic field into the coin. The field makes electric currents flow inside the metal. How well they flow depends on what the metal is, and the machine shows it as electrical conductivity in MS/m. Fine gold reads about 45 MS/m and 22K coin gold about 9.7. Tungsten reads about 18.8, so a tungsten core pulls the reading away from where real gold should be. The field reaches up to about 0.65 mm into each face of the coin.
| Fake | What the reading shows |
|---|---|
| Tungsten core under real gold | Tungsten reads about 18.8 MS/m, which matches neither fine gold nor 22K gold, so the value moves off target |
| Gold plating over brass or copper | The field reaches below a thin plating, so the piece does not read as solid gold |
| A coin or bar of a lower purity than claimed | The reading does not match the value for the metal you selected |
| A sealed coin you must not open | The test works through the capsule, so the seal and the packaging stay intact |
Both test gold without damage, but they answer different questions.
| Your question | The machine to use |
|---|---|
| Is there tungsten or another metal hidden inside this coin or bar? | This conductivity tester |
| Can I check a sealed coin without opening it? | This conductivity tester |
| What karat or purity is this jewellery? | An XRF gold analyzer |
| Which metals, and how much of each, are in this alloy? | An XRF gold analyzer, such as the Signet - PC |
XRF reads the surface of the metal. Conductivity reaches below the surface. A shop that buys both bullion and jewellery often keeps one of each.

Place it on this tester. It measures the electrical conductivity of the metal with a magnetic field, so nothing is scratched, filed or dipped in acid, and the coin keeps its finish.
Yes. Tungsten reads about 18.8 MS/m, far from fine gold at about 45 and from 22K coin gold at about 9.7, so a tungsten core moves the reading off the value for gold. The weighing scale cannot find it, because tungsten weighs almost the same as gold.
Yes. It reads through capsules, blisters and foil up to about 3 mm thick, so a sealed coin stays sealed.
No. It shows conductivity and whether it matches the metal you selected. For karat and purity, use an XRF gold analyzer.
Coins and small bars from about 1/4 oz up to about 2 oz, depending on the shape and the metal. The piece should be at least about 0.8 to 1 mm thick.
Yes. You select the metal and the reading is compared with it. 22K coin gold reads about 9.7 MS/m and fine silver about 61. Platinum and palladium can be tested too.
Megasiemens per metre, the unit of electrical conductivity. The higher the number, the better the metal conducts electricity.
It is a screening test. The field reaches about 0.65 mm into each face, so on a high-value piece also check the weight and size and use a second method before you buy.
