Signet FSDD XRF gold analyzer guide: parts of the machine, how XRF reads gold, four steps to test a sample, what it can test and who uses it

Semsons Tech Signet FSDD - XRF Gold Analyzer for Purity and 72-Element Testing

Gold purity to ±0.10% and up to 72 elements in one test, with nothing taken off the piece.

The Signet FSDD is a benchtop XRF gold analyzer. You place the sample in the chamber, start the test from your computer, and between 10 and 60 seconds later the screen shows the gold percentage, the karat and every element found in the alloy. It reads gold from 1% to 99.99% and takes solid pieces, powder and liquid. It is built for work where the figure goes on paper afterwards: a hallmarking check, a refinery lot, a bullion purchase or an export order.

How It Works

A tungsten-target X-ray tube sends a beam at a 1 to 2 mm spot on the sample. Each element in that spot sends back X-rays at its own energy. The Si-PIN detector sorts those energies, and the software counts them to give the percentage of each element. The karat follows from the gold figure. The FSDD's detector separates energies to 145 ± 15 eV, so elements whose signals sit close together are counted apart.

How to Use It

  1. Place the sample in the chamber and close it. The HD camera shows the test spot on your screen, so you aim at the metal and not at a stone.
  2. Start the test from the software and choose the time: 10 seconds for a quick check, 40 seconds for the best reading, up to 60.
  3. Read the result - gold percentage, karat and the element list. Print it or save it against the job.

Powder and liquid go in a sample cup. No acid, no chemicals and no sample preparation.

What the Result Tells You

What you need to know What the FSDD reports
The karat of a piece Gold percentage to ±0.10%, and the karat from it
What the gold is alloyed with Silver, copper, zinc, nickel, cobalt, iron and the other metals present, each as a percentage
Platinum-group metals Platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and osmium are on the element list
Unwanted elements in gold Iridium, ruthenium, osmium, cadmium and lead are reported when present in the tested spot
Whether a refined lot is on target The gold figure and the impurity breakdown before dispatch

XRF measures the metal the beam reaches, which is the surface layer of the tested spot. A plated item or a bar with a different core can read as its outer metal, so a piece whose weight or origin does not match its reading should be checked further before you buy.

What You Can Test

Gold bars, biscuits and coins. Rings, chains, bangles, earrings and pendants, including pieces with stones set in them. Old and scrap gold. Silver, platinum and palladium. Refinery samples, filings and powder, and liquid samples in a sample cup. The chamber takes items up to 368 × 298 × 86 mm.

Common Questions

What is the Signet FSDD?

A benchtop XRF gold analyzer from Semsons Tech. It measures the gold percentage and karat of a sample and lists up to 72 elements in the alloy, without damaging it. It connects to your own PC or laptop.

How accurate is the Signet FSDD?

±0.10% on gold content, across an analysis range of 1% to 99.99%. For the most settled reading, run the test for 40 seconds.

How many elements can it detect?

Up to 72. Alongside gold it reports silver, platinum, palladium, iridium, rhodium, ruthenium, osmium, rhenium, copper, nickel, zinc, cobalt, iron, manganese, tungsten, lead and cadmium, among others, each as a percentage.

Is XRF gold testing safe for jewellery?

Yes. The X-ray does not mark the piece or remove any metal. There is no acid, no scratching and no filing, and the item comes out exactly as it went in.

How long does one test take?

You choose between 10 and 60 seconds. Ten seconds suits a quick check, and 40 seconds gives the best reading when the figure goes on a report.

Can it test powder and liquid samples?

Yes. Solid pieces go straight into the chamber. Powder and liquid go in a sample cup, which covers refinery sweeps, filings and solutions as well as finished jewellery and bars.

Can it test jewellery with stones?

Yes. The HD camera shows the test spot before the test runs, so you aim the beam at the metal beside the stone. The stones do not have to be removed.

Can it detect gold plating or a filled bar?

XRF reads the surface layer of the tested spot, so a plated item or a bar with a different core can read as its outer metal. If the weight, feel or origin of a piece does not match its reading, check it further before you buy.

Does it need a computer?

Yes. The Signet FSDD has no screen of its own and runs from your PC or laptop over USB or Ethernet, with printer support. If you want the computer built in, look at the Signet Si-Pin with Touch Screen or the Signet - PC.

How much does the Signet FSDD cost?

The full product price and the booking amount are shown at the top of this page, and both include GST. The booking amount counts toward the full price, and the balance is due on installation.

Can I buy it online?

No. The Signet FSDD is enquiry only and is not sold through online checkout. Message or call our sales team for the quotation, availability and booking. One machine per booking.

Is delivery free, and can I return it?

Delivery is free, and the machine is dispatched about 45 days after booking. It is not returnable. If it has a manufacturing defect, a replacement may be offered once our team has inspected the machine and verified the defect.
