Signet PC XRF gold testing machine guide: parts of the machine, how XRF reads gold, three steps to test a piece, what it can test and who uses it

Semsons Tech Signet PC - XRF Gold Testing Machine with Built-in Computer

Gold purity, karat and the metals in the alloy, on a screen built into the machine.

The Signet PC is a benchtop XRF gold testing machine for the jewellery counter. The Windows computer sits inside the cabinet and the touch screen is set into the front, so there is no laptop or separate computer to connect. You place the piece in the chamber, close it and start the test. The screen shows the gold percentage and the karat to ±0.50% on gold content, along with the other metals in the alloy, 7 metals in one test. Nothing is cut, filed or touched with acid, and the piece goes back to the customer as it came in.

How It Works

The machine sends an X-ray beam at a small spot on the piece. Each metal in that spot answers with X-rays at its own energy. The Si-PIN detector picks up those signals, and the software on the built-in computer counts them to give the percentage of each metal. The karat is worked out from the gold percentage. The beam does not remove or change any metal, which is why the test leaves no mark.

How to Use It

  1. Place the piece in the chamber and close it. On a piece with stones, set the metal, not the stone, over the test spot.
  2. Start the test from the touch screen, or with the keyboard and mouse.
  3. Read the result on the screen: gold percentage, karat and the metals found. Connect a printer to the built-in computer to hand the customer a copy.

No acid, no chemicals and no sample preparation.

The Built-in Computer

What is built in What it means at your counter
Windows computer inside the cabinet No laptop to keep charged and no tower under the counter
Touch screen in the front panel Start the test and read the result on the machine itself
Keyboard and mouse as well Type customer names and reference numbers instead of tapping them
Full Windows desktop Your own billing or stock software can run on the same computer
Analyzer software supplied Set up by our engineer at installation, matched to the detector

What the Result Tells You

What you need to know What the Signet PC shows
Is this piece the karat it is sold as? The gold percentage to ±0.50%, and the karat from it. A piece sold as 22K that reads lower shows up at once.
What is the gold mixed with? The other metals in the alloy, each as a percentage, 7 metals in one test
What to pay for old gold A gold figure to value the piece on, before you pay or exchange
What to lend against The gold content of a pledged piece, before the loan amount is set

XRF reads the metal the beam reaches, which is the surface of the tested spot. A gold-plated piece, or a bar with a different metal inside, can read as its outer layer. If the weight, feel or origin of a piece does not match its reading, check it further before you buy.

XRF Compared with Other Gold Tests

Test How it compares with the Signet PC
Acid test Needs a scratch and acid on the piece, and gives a karat range. The Signet PC gives a percentage without marking the piece.
Touchstone Rubs a streak of metal off the piece onto a stone, then compares it by eye with test needles. The Signet PC takes nothing off and gives a figure.
Conductivity tester Measures how well the metal carries electricity, to screen coins and bars. It does not list the metals in the alloy or give a karat. The Signet PC does both.
Fire assay Melts a cut sample in a laboratory and is the reference method for purity. It destroys the sample and takes hours. The Signet PC gives a reading at the counter.

What You Can Test

Gold jewellery of every kind: rings, chains, bangles, earrings, pendants and necklaces, including pieces with stones set in them. Gold coins and small bars. Old gold brought in for exchange, resale or as a loan pledge.

Who Uses It

  • Jewellery showrooms checking stock that comes in from karigars and suppliers, and pieces that go out to customers
  • Old gold and exchange counters valuing a customer's gold before paying or exchanging
  • Gold loan and pawn counters checking a pledged piece before the loan amount is set

For hallmarking, refinery lots or 999 bullion, where the figure goes on a certificate, the Signet FSDD with ±0.10% on gold is the better fit.

Common Questions

What is the Signet PC?

A benchtop XRF gold testing machine from Semsons Tech, with the Windows computer and touch screen built into the cabinet. It shows the gold percentage, karat and the metals in a piece's alloy without damaging it, and needs no separate computer.

How does an XRF machine test gold?

It sends an X-ray beam at a small spot on the piece. Each metal answers with its own X-ray signal, and the machine counts those signals to give the percentage of each metal and the karat. Nothing touches the piece.

Will the test damage my jewellery?

No. There is no acid, no scratching and no filing. The piece comes out of the chamber exactly as it went in, so it can go straight back to the customer.

How accurate is the Signet PC?

±0.50% on gold content. On a 22K piece, which is 91.6% gold, the reading falls within half a percentage point either way. That is close enough to tell a 22K piece from a lower karat.

Does it need a separate computer?

No. The Windows computer is inside the cabinet and the touch screen is on the front. A keyboard and mouse connect to it for typing customer details. The Signet FSDD and Signet Si-Pin, by contrast, run from a PC you supply.

Can it detect gold plating?

XRF reads the metal at the surface of the tested spot. A gold-plated piece can read as gold, and a bar with a different metal inside can read as its outer layer. If the weight, feel or origin of a piece does not match its reading, check it further before you buy.

Is the X-ray safe to use in a shop?

The chamber is shielded and has an interlock: the X-ray stops when the chamber is opened, so the test runs only with it closed. Our engineer goes through safe use with your operator at installation.

Can it test jewellery with stones?

Yes. Place the piece so the metal, not the stone, sits over the test spot. The stones do not have to be removed.

What is the difference between an XRF machine and a gold coin tester?

An XRF machine reads which metals are in the piece and how much of each, so it gives the karat. A conductivity coin tester measures how well the metal carries electricity. It screens coins and bars, but it does not list the metals or give a karat.

How much does the Signet PC cost?

The full product price and the booking amount per machine are shown at the top of this page, and both include GST. The booking amount counts toward the full price, and the balance is due on installation.

Can I buy it online, and how many can I book?

It is not sold through online checkout. Book 1 or 2 machines through our sales team on WhatsApp or by phone, with the booking amount paid for each machine.

How long does delivery take, and can I return it?

Dispatch is about 30–40 days from booking, and delivery is free. Returns are not accepted. If a manufacturing defect is verified on inspection, a replacement may be considered, subject to the product and service terms.
